Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishti رضي الله عنه, revered as one of the greatest saints of Islamic mysticism, is lovingly remembered as Khwaja Gharib Nawaz رضي الله عنه, meaning “Helper of the Poor.” A radiant luminary from the noble household (Ahl al-Bayt) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he devoted his life to spreading love, compassion, and guidance. His presence illuminated countless hearts, and he remains a beacon of inspiration for people across nations, faiths, and cultures.
Khwaja Garib Nawaz رضي الله عنه began his early education under the direct supervision of his father, Hazrat Syed Ghayasuddin رضي الله عنه, who was a renowned scholar of his time and a man of deep piety. By the tender age of nine, young Moinuddin had memorized the entire Holy Qur’an. After this remarkable achievement, he was enrolled in a Maktaba (traditional school) in Sanjar, where he pursued higher studies in Tafseer (Qur’anic exegesis), Hadith, and Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence).
His exceptional intellect, sharp memory, and deep spiritual inclination allowed him to master these disciplines in a very short period. His teachers and companions admired his dedication, humility, and brilliance, seeing in him the signs of a future guide for the Ummah. His formative years in the city of Khurasan were marked by both academic excellence and moral refinement, and he quickly gained a reputation as a young scholar of promise.
Until the age of twelve, Khwaja Garib Nawaz رضي الله عنه lived a comfortable and secure life under the loving care of his parents. However, at the age of fifteen, he faced a great trial when his father, Ghayasuddin رضي الله عنه, who was the symbol of affection and kindness in the family, passed away. (إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ). This loss deeply affected him, yet his mother, Syeda Ummul Wara رضي الله عنها, provided unwavering care, love, and guidance, nurturing his character and strengthening his spirit.
Following his father’s demise, Khwaja Moinuddin inherited property, including farmland and a mill, which became his responsibility at a young age. This phase of his life instilled in him both resilience and independence, while his education and upbringing shaped his spiritual depth. These early experiences prepared him for the extraordinary role he would later play as the Sultan of Hearts and a source of mercy for humanity.
